Polvo - Today's Active Lifestyles
With 1993's Today's Active Lifestyles, Polvo creates a guitar-centered indie rock album unlike almost any other from the decade
Out of the fertile Chapel Hill, North Carolina scene emerged Polvo at the start of the 1990s. Their sound is lumped into math rock, a term the band themselves reject, but the elements are there - progressive rock filtered through an indie lens. On their 1993 sophomore album Today's Active Lifestyles, you'd be hard-pressed to find any evidence of Jethro Tull, Yes, or Emerson, Lake & Palmer. But King Crimson meets Sonic Youth? Now we're warmer. Guitar lines criss-cross with noise and bends that lesser bands would likely turn into a messy dirge, while Polvo creates a singular sound unto themselves.

Big Sugar - Heated
Deren S. has selected Big Sugar's 1998 album Heated as his 2021 pick. Make sure to give it a listen, vote in the poll, and leave a comment for the show.
Not sure how far this album reached on an international level, but in Canada it was huge! If I'm not mistaken there were three big singles, particularly "On the Scene" and "Better Get Used to It", which contains some fantastic drumming. The singles aside, this album contains some stellar deep cuts that still hold up today. I'm not generally a fan of reggae influenced rock, but the production and styles on this album mesh perfectly, creating a perfect rock record. Gordie's guitar work alone would warrant this a worthy album, but everyone else in the band brings their A game. WORTHY ALBUM ALL THE WAY. - Kyle Bittner
Agree with Kyle and I love how passionate my Canadian friends are about their artists. This is my favourite big sugar rekkid. The artwork is next level boy band stuff - Richard Waterman
Worthy Album Cover! - Lars
Fantastic album, grooves and guitars aplenty, strong vocals and some singalong choruses, a record that bucked the trends in 1998, worthy album. - DARREN LEEMAN
I respect the variety. the album is better if you don't have to look at the cover. the BTO cover hurt me. - Jeff Gentes
