I loved every song on this album. And my one regret is that I didn't discover the band until Moving Pictures, so I never had the joy of hearing Spirit of the Radio for the first time on vinyl. Tom Sawyer and Limelight are awesome for what they are, but Spirit of the Radio it's just about my favorite song about the love of music. I'd entertain alternate suggestions.
This is my favorite album from this period, late 1970s early 1980s, that death of Led Zeppelin, birth of post punk and new wave we rarely got to hear time capsule. Regatta de Blanc by the Police would be another one, but Permanent Waves wins out.
I wore the grooves out. And I found it to be a great album to play while writing college papers.
I'm a huge Rush fan and this album is probably my favorite. You can make a case for Rush having metal elements or at least being attractive to metal fans for the heaviness of some of their tunes: Anthem, Cygnus X-1, and Working Man for example. BTW - Natural Science rules!! :)
I have an odd relationship to Rush - this album must have been in the background when I was growing up, because the songs are familiar, but I don't think I would have recognized any of the titles or the album cover.

Favorite track: Freewill.
Runner up: Natural Science.

I remember where I was when I saw it and heard it. Hollywood Records, across from the mall. I bought it immediately. The price on release day: $5.00.

Great stuff, though!
Wait, Rush isn't metal.
