Soulwax - Much Against Everyone's Advice
Before becoming one of the hot remix artists of the 2000s, Soulwax combined crunchy guitars and pop melodies on their 1998 sophomore album
Soulwax is best known for its remixes of such 2000s artists as LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, Gorillaz, Tiga, and more. Still, the band got their start as a catchy alternative rock band produced by the Chris Goss (of Masters of Reality) on their debut and Dave Sardy (Barkmarket) on their sophomore album, Much Against Everyone's Advice. Splitting their sound between chunky, distorted guitars on tracks like "Too Many DJs" and "Conversation Intercom" and a more delicate approach on "Overweight Karate Kid" and "Flying Without Wings" gives the album variety. But depending on which version you listen to, the album can run long after an elongated lull in the middle that could be rectified with a reshuffling of the tracklist. October Album Review Tournament - Final
Which album should we feature in a future episode of Dig Me Out? Here's how it works. We posted a group of nine suggested albums from the hopper last three weeks. The DMO Union cast votes to decide the albums to move forward. Here are the top two winners from each group. You only get one vote in the final round. Choose wisely 🤣.
Willie Dillon: Tracy Bonham-The Burdens of Being Upright
Fun, dynamic rock album with some explosive vocals.
Kyle Bittner: Chris Cornell-Sweet Euphoria
I do not believe that this has been covered before and you do not hear a lot of people mention this album when discussing Chris. Its always Soundgarden and that other band.
Paul Richardson: Fudge Tunnel-Creep Diets
"Hailing from Nottingham in England, this beautiful album of tuneful noise kept me company for many hours as a teenager. Plus they were one of the first bands I was able to see live in a teeny sweatbox of a venue, which is now a Hugo Boss store 🤢
I'd love to hear you guys natter about one of my favourite albums, plus it's rare that an English band gets any coverage 😉"
Richard Waterman: Burning Tree-Burning Tree
Great bluesy rock album. Marc Ford from The Black Crowes plays and sings.
Martin: Belle and Sebastian-The boy with the Arab strap
Emma Wilson : Daisy Chainsaw-Eleventeen
Perhaps more known for her early 2000's work with Queenadreena, Daisy Chainsaw's debut album features Katie Jane Garside as chaotic, charismatic lead vocalist, whispering childlike or screaming alongside noisy, piercing guitar work. Interesting, abrasive and immediate, this record is a shining example for me of the experimentalism in rock of the early 90s. Pity Katie Jane became a recluse for a few years after it and didn't feature on the follow up in 1994! Would love to hear you guys thrash this one out.
