The Mountain Goats - Jenny from Thebes
"Jenny from Thebes" by The Mountain Goats is a compelling sequel to their 2002 album "All Hail West Texas," contained in the band's 22nd studio album through Merge Records. Unlike its predecessor's minimalistic nature, crafted solely by band leader John Darnielle, this sequel unfolds a richer narrative as a rock opera. It delves into the story of "Jenny," a character from previous albums, exploring themes of individuality and society through her interactions with her southwestern ranch and the uneasy West Texas town surrounding it. Recorded at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the album, featuring various artists alongside Darnielle.
Dokken - Heaven Comes Down
"When Heaven Comes Down" by Dokken was initially a track off 1984’s Tooth and Nail. In 2023, it became the title of a new Dokken album, symbolizing a fresh chapter for the band as viewed by frontman Don Dokken, who saw it as a departure from past conflicts. The album has been praised for its excellent production, soulful vocals, and guitar work by Jon Levin.
DJ Shadow - Action Adventure
"Action Adventure" is DJ Shadow's seventh studio album, showcasing a journey of personal musical exploration distinct from his earlier works. Unlike the guest-artist laden "Our Pathetic Age," this album is largely instrumental, embodying DJ Shadow's shift towards self-driven musical creation. The album emerged from a deeply personal endeavor where DJ Shadow, real name Joshua Davis, ventured to "write music that flexed different energies," drawing inspiration from a vast collection of 80s radio mix tapes and his extensive vinyl records collection. Released on October 27, 2023, through Mass Appeal, nearly three decades after his debut, the album comprises 14 tracks, encapsulating DJ Shadow's evolved musical thoughts devoid of collaborations. The lead single "Ozone Scraper" sets a unique tone for the album, with visuals capturing a zen-like ambiance filmed in Uzbekistan.
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - Bauhaus Staircase
"Bauhaus Staircase" is the anticipated final studio album by the iconic English electronic duo Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD). Born out of the pandemic-induced lockdown, the album reflects a newfound creative vigor within the duo, particularly seen in the title track which symbolizes artistic resilience amidst adversity. The album delves into contemporary and existential themes such as the Anthropocene era and political corruption, wrapped in OMD's signature blend of classic pop hooks and direct lyrics.
Duran Duran - Danse Macabre
"Danse Macabre" marks a unique venture in Duran Duran's illustrious career, embodying a Halloween theme inspired by a 2022 concert in Las Vegas. The spooky essence of Halloween reverberates through the album, mixing new tracks with reimagined classics and covers by notable artists like the Rolling Stones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and the Specials. This eerie yet captivating theme is not the only aspect that makes "Danse Macabre" stand out; the album witnesses the return of former guitarists Andy Taylor and Warren Cuccurullo, adding a touch of nostalgia to this fresh endeavor. The title track, "Danse Macabre," released as the lead single, captures the "joy and madness of Halloween" as described by keyboardist Nick Rhodes, resonating with the ominous, industrial rhythms emblematic of Duran Duran’s evolved sound. The band, alongside producers Josh Blair and Mr Hudson, crafts a set of songs that includes covers of Billie Eilish, the Rolling Stones, and others, along with remakes of their own older tracks like "Night Boat" and "Secret Oktober," now reborn as "Secret Oktober 31st."
Taking Back Sunday - 152
"152" by Taking Back Sunday, crafted in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, marks a notable evolution in the band's sound under the helm of producer Tushar Apte. Frontman Adam Lazzara revealed that this eighth studio album encapsulates broader musical influences, introducing more pop-infused material alongside their emblematic rock essence. This fresh concoction of sounds resonates through singles like "The One," "S'old," "Amphetamine Smiles," and "Keep Going," portraying a mature yet vibrant musical identity. The album reflects the band's ability to evolve and adapt, infusing new energy into their long-standing legacy, which, as critics note, defies the band's age and showcases a band that continues to innovate musically.
The Kills - God Games
"God Games" by The Kills delves into spiritual themes, marking a shift from the conventional duo formula prevalent in the music scene. In this album, Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince explore eerie sonic textures, starting with the opening track 'New York,' reflecting a quest for salvation from life's pressures in tracks like ‘103’ and ‘My Girls My Girls.’ Working with producer Paul Epworth, they maintain a distinct garage rock sound while venturing into profound thematic territories. The title track metaphorically explores the idea of God leading someone into life's trials, and the album channels old-school Christian music vibes to evoke biblical passion.
Circus Devils - Squeeze the Needle
"Squeeze the Needle" is the creative brainchild of the Ohio-based psychedelic rock trio Circus Devils, comprised of Robert Pollard, Todd Tobias, and Tim Tobias. This album breaks a six-year hiatus, marking their 15th studio album and adding a fresh chapter to their whimsical musical journey that commenced in the early 2000s. Described as a "funhouse romp full of rock 'n' roll swagger and childlike glee," the album showcases a pounding psychedelia, especially in the single "The Owl Presents..." which resonates with a vibe reminiscent of The Doors. The tracklist, including songs like "Honeymoon in Waynesville," "Here We Are," "Getting Better," "Age of Transfusion," and "(I'm a) Happy Baby Boy," reveals a wide spectrum of musical storytelling, encapsulating the playful yet robust musical essence that Circus Devils is celebrated for.
American Analog Set - For Forever
The American Analog Set's latest album "For Forever" emerges after an 18-year hiatus, marking a striking evolution in their musical journey. This album, crafted over nearly a decade, intricately "folds time and space," offering both a dark and vibrant auditory experience to listeners. While the band's signature dreamlike soundscapes remain, they are now infused with a newfound depth and a touch of darkness. The troubled lyrics and occasionally damaged, snarling sounds reflect a matured, yet adventurous spirit, showcasing a band that is willing to delve into uncharted thematic territories without losing sight of their roots.
Letters To Cleo - Bad Man / It’s Sunny Outside (Single)
The single "Bad Man / It's Sunny Outside" by Letters To Cleo presents a captivating contrast in themes. "Bad Man" explores a dark narrative of a woman ending an abusive relationship through drastic means, while "It's Sunny Outside" juxtaposes with an upbeat tune about the oppressive nature of constant good weather in Southern California. This release marks the band's return since their 2019 holiday EP "Ok Christmas." The music emerged from pre-pandemic writing sessions between vocalist Kay Hanley and guitarist Michael Eisenstein in Los Angeles, with both tracks produced by Billy Lefler at The Deathstar studio. This single, available in digital format and exclusive tri-color splatter vinyl at the band's Fall show, precedes Letters To Cleo's annual Fall Homecoming Tour celebrating the 30th anniversary of their seminal album "Aurora Gory Alice."
